Half a million years ago, a piece of cosmic rubble struck a glancing blow to the alien artefact humanity calls the Sugar Lump, leaving a smear of basalt 2000 kilometres long loosely clinging to its immutable surface. Humans dug warrens into the rock, and later impacted a second, icy asteroid onto the surface. Gravity pooled the resulting air and water in the centre of the cube's flat face in a lenticular sea, spattered with archipelagos of islands.
